Illustration Course at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts

Classes for 2017

Drawing for ages 9-12

  • Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30
  • Starts January 4th-April 5th
  • 14 weeks $400 (includes materials)

Drawing provides the foundation for every form of painting, including figure, landscape, still-life, and even abstract. This course stresses the understanding of value, proportion, and scale, as well as the compositional and emotive qualities of a drawing.

Advanced Drawing for ages 9-12

  • Wednesdays, 4:30-5:30
  • April 19th -June 14th
  • 9 weeks $275 (includes materials)

This course is designed to improve drawing skills. Students will develop mastery of the effect of light upon inanimate objects and deepen their understanding of value, line quality, texture, and pattern. Media includes charcoal, conte, and graphite.

Portrait Drawing for Teens and Adults

  • Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 pm
  • January 3rd – March 7th
  • 10 weeks $500

Students develop a cursory understanding of anatomy and the structure of the head as the basis for creative expression. Emphasis is placed on proportion and value, as well as the emotional quality of the drawing. Materials include charcoal, conte, and graphite. Classwork consists of working from master drawings and anatomical studies.

Intermediate Portrait Drawing for Teens and Adults

  • Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30 pm
  • March 14th – May 23rd (no class April 11th for Montgomery County schools spring break)
  • 10 weeks $700
  • class size is limited to 5 students.

Work from a live model in a small group to develop your portraiture skills. Students are guided through the process of drawing from a model in dry media, including charcoal, conte, and graphite.

Illustration for Teens and Adults

This course is designed to encourage and develop imagination and communication skills. We’ll use a series of creative writing and drawing exercises to develop characters, settings, and narratives.

Illustration for ages 9-12

  • Saturday, January 21st
  • 10am-1pm (bring a bag lunch)

This course is designed to encourage and develop imagination and communication skills. We’ll use a series of creative writing and drawing exercises to develop characters,  settings, and story ideas. Students will work on a series of sketches, drawings, and finished illustrations.

Color Theory Intensive for Teens and Adults

  • Saturday and Sunday, February 18th-19th
  • 10am- 3pm (bring a bag lunch)
  • $325 includes materials

This is an introduction to the essentials of color theory and design. Various approaches to color perception are introduced. Class work consists of demonstrations and experiments based on those demonstrations. Students work toward the mastery of color mixtures and harmonies to be executed in a series of original designs.

Picture Book Illustration/ Storyboard workshop for Teens and Adults 

  • Saturday and Sunday, February 25th and 26th
  • 10am-3pm (bring a bag lunch)
  • $250

This is an introduction to visual story-telling. Using poetry, myths, and folktales as inspiration, students will learn to develop a storyboard to complement the texts. We will examine a variety of picture books, from classics to contemporary, to develop an understanding of pacing, passive vs. active characters, and layout and design of a picture book.

Return to Painting for Adults

  • Saturday, March 18th
  • 10 am- 2pm (bring a bag lunch)
  • $100

Feeling stumped? Bring your unfinished work for group feedback. Be prepared to experiment and push beyond the comfortable or familiar. We’ll talk about developing consistent studio practice and forming better work habits.

Make a Book: Bestiary for ages 9-12

  • Saturday, April 1st
  • 10am-2pm (bring a bag lunch)
  • $120 materials included

Students will make a hardcover book and fill it with creatures from their imagination.
