I am really excited to have illustrated "Why Fish Don't Exist," by Lulu Miller, a non-fiction book which weaves her personal memoir and the biography of a 19th century taxonomist together. (Coming in February 2020 from Simon and Schuster). Miller shares my interests in natural history and surrealism and encouraged me to approach this project with a sense of ambiguity and mystery. In imitation of the etchings or woodcuts often found in old folk-tale illustrations, I illustrated the book in scratchboard.
Lulu Miller has been working on this project for many years. She has written many brilliant short stories and is renowned for her work on such NPR shows as RadioLab and Invisibilia.
